A Building Permit is required for the items listed below. This list is not inclusive, but does cover the more common items that require permits. If you have questions as to whether or not your project needs a permit, please contact the Department of Inspection Services at (414) 423-2100.

- Room/porch conversions
- Structural alterations and changes to interior circulation patterns
- Garages
- Storage sheds
- Reroofing, siding & trim
- Rec-rooms/basement offices
- Decks (attached, detached and decks surrounding pools)
- Fences
- Foundation repairs
- Window replacements where opening is being altered
- Fireplaces, wood-burning stoves & fireplace inserts (new or replacements)
- Gazebos
- Swimming pools (above-ground & in-ground)
- Grading or landscaping involving changes in yard grade
- Hot tubs (interior & exterior)
- Signs
- Driveway approach
- Recreational facilities (basketball courts, tennis courts, etc.)
- Dog kennels
