New Vaccine Recommendations for Teens
April 28, 2011 | 12:42 PM Posted by the Health
Department
All kids should be vaccinated against meningococcal
disease at age 11 or older. It is now recommended that
those who got the vaccine before age 16 get a one-time
booster dose after their 16th birthday. No booster is
need if the primary dose was given at age 16 or older.
Meningococcal germs can cause serious blood and brain infections. Symptoms can come on suddenly and quickly take a turn for the worse. About 10% of infected people die, even with appropriate treatment. Another 20% suffer permanent body damage. There are about 3,000 cases in the US each year. Teens and young adults are twice as likely as everyone else to get meningitis.
The vaccine gives very good protection against 4 of the 5 most common types of meningococcal infections. It is very safe. Severe reactions are extremely rare.
The vaccine can usually be gotten from your child’s doctor. The Greendale Health Department also offers the vaccine to all Wisconsin residents for a nominal fee. Call the Greendale Health Department (414-423-2110) for more information or to schedule an appointment for this important vaccine.

Greendale Police Arrest Subject Involved in Bank Robbery
April 22, 2011 | 11:03 AM Posted by the Greendale
Police Department
On Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at approximately 3:00 p.m.,
Greendale Police were dispatched to the US Bank,
located on South 76th Street in the Village of
Greendale, where employees reported a bank robbery had
just occurred. No weapon was displayed or implied at
that time.
The suspect, later identified as Matthew E. Schmid, demanded money from a teller and fled the bank on foot after receiving an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect ran across the parking lot in an attempt to hide in the Southridge Mall. Police searched the Mall, however, the suspect changed into clothing he had previously hidden in the Mall and eluded being taken into custody at that time. Sergeant Mike Adamczak, after seeing photographs of the suspect in the bank, recalled seeing him at a store within Southridge Mall. Evidence obtained from that store assisted in identifying Schmid.
Officers were able to locate the suspect in the 2200 block of South 78th Street. With the assistance of West Allis Police, he was taken into custody without incident. Schmid was found to be in possession of some of the stolen money and additional money was later recovered in the City of Milwaukee.
Greendale investigators determined that Schmid was also involved in 2 burglaries and the arson of a residence in the city of Milwaukee.
Matthew Schmid was charged with one count of Robbery by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office. Milwaukee Police are currently seeking charges for the incidents that occurred in their jurisdiction.

Greendale Police Arrest Subjects Involved with Damage to Parkway
April 14, 2011 | 01:36 PM Posted by the Greendale
Police Department
Greendale Interim Police Chief Bob Malasuk announced
that on Monday, April 4, 2011, Greendale Police
Officers arrested 5 adult male subjects for causing
criminal damage to the Root River Parkway.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., Police were notified to respond to the Root River Parkway near Grange Avenue where there was a report of vehicles driving recklessly on the grass. When Officers arrived, they were able to stop 5 mud-covered vehicles leaving the area. In checking the area, Officers found a substantial amount of damage to the grass and soccer areas of the Parkway. The soft, wet grass of the soccer field had been driven on, causing deep ruts and torn up grass. Parkway officials estimate the damage to be approximately $5,000, and will be seeking restitution.
All 5 male subjects, who reside in Milwaukee and West Allis, were arrested in their vehicles. They admitted to driving on the grass and causing the damage although they gave no explanation as to why they were driving on the soccer fields.
On Thursday, April 14, 2011, all 5 men were charged in the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office with Criminal Damage to Property.

Wal-Mart Proposal for Development Would Bring a Grocery Back to Greendale; Next Meeting on April 13th
April 04, 2011 | 01:49 PM Posted by the Village
Manager
On Wednesday, April 13 the Greendale Planning Commission will meet to discuss the preposed development of a Wal-Mart in Greendale. All interested persons are invited to attend. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and will be held at The Greendale Safety Center. 5911 West Grange Ave. For the meeting agenda, please click here.
The proposal includes a Wal-Mart market and pharmacy and two out lots for development by future tenants. The proposed Wal-Mart market would mark the return of a grocery store to the Village of Greendale.
“Wal-Mart’s proposal to develop a retail and grocery store at the Bowling Congress site presents significant opportunity for the Village of Greendale to redevelop this abandoned site without any village-offered economic incentives,” said Village President John Hermes. “The addition of a major retailer with grocery store would enhance retail diversity and function within the South 76th Street business corridor."
The building will be less than 100,000 feet in size, which is half the size of a Wal-Mart Supercenter. Since the Bowling Congress site is not located in a TIF District, the increase in assessed value of approximately 10 million dollars produced by the development would improve the Village's tax base. The proposal will be available to the public for review on April 6th. The open house will allow residents to review concept drawings and site plans, and provide input to the developer and Village representatives.
“I look forward to reviewing the proposal and listening to the feedback from our residents,” said Hermes. “Following the open house discussion we will determine the best course of action for the use of the site.”
The Wal-Mart proposal follows several recent announcements of new developments in Greendale along the South 76th Street commercial area, including a new senior housing development, breaking ground this week, as well as a commitment from Simon Property Group to invest in a multi-million dollar revitalization of Southridge Mall.
