West College Avenue Rehabilitation Project
September 28, 2011 | 05:34 PM Posted by the Department of Public Works
Beginning on Monday, October 4, Milwaukee County will rehabilitate the section of W. College Ave from S. 27th St. to S. 51st St. The road will be milled and capped with new asphalt and several areas will see drainage ditch improvements as well as culvert work. Work will begin at S. 51st St. and proceed east. Eastbound traffic on W. College Ave. will be rerouted to W. Rawson Avenue during that phase.
The eastbound phase is projected to take about 30 days with westbound traffic continuing as normal. When the eastbound phase is complete the process will reverse for the westbound phase. The project is expected to be completed by Thanksgiving.
Please expect delays and some inconvenience and as always drive extra carefully in work zones. Call the Milwaukee County Highway Department at 257-6566 for more information.

2011 Leaf Collection Schedule
September 27, 2011 | 06:09 AM Posted by the Department of Public Works
The 2011 Village leaf collection will begin on Monday, October 17 and continue through Friday, November 11. Leaves may also be brought to the Refuse and Recycling Center during regular hours of operation. All residential properties will receive a leaf collection on each of the two recycling collection dates within that timeframe. Please see the 2011 Recycling Calendar for your collection day. Click here to download the schedule.
Often the crews will complete the scheduled day collection a bit early and move into the next days route. We will always begin the scheduled collection day first regardless of previous collection activity. Leaves should be placed in the street no earlier than one week before the scheduled collection and raked two feet from the curb in piles no wider than four feet. Please remember that only leaves and grass clippings may be presented for collection. Any leaf piles containing branches, brush, soil, rocks, trash or any other materials that could damage the collection equipment will not be collected and proper disposal will become the property owners responsibility.
Please call the Department of Public Works at 423-2133 for further information.

September 24, 2011 | 07:42 AM Posted by the Greendale Police Department
The official trick-or-treat hours for the Village of Greendale are Sunday, October 30, 2011 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. Trick-or-treat hours were adjusted this year to provide for the option of trick-or-treating after sunset. On October 30th, sunset occurs at approximately 6:00pm. The Greendale Police Department has assigned police officers to extra patrols during trick or treating.
Halloween Safety Tips for Trick or Treating
THE GREENDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT, PARTNERED WITH HALLOWEEN EXPRESS, IS PROVIDING FREE GLOW STICKS. Look for the tent at the end of the parade route (3:00 to 4:00pm) or stop at the Greendale Police Station during trick-or-treat hours (while supplies last). See the Village of Greendale website for parade details.
Halloween Safety Tips for Trick or Treating
- Always trick-or-treat with a supervising adult.
- There is safety in numbers, always trick-or-treat with friends.
- Be careful when you cross a street. Make sure to look in both directions and make sure there are no cars coming.
- It is important that costumes allow for a clear field of vision. Face paint is recommended, but if a mask is used, ensure eye holes are large enough as to not cover the face.
- Make your costume out of bright colors or affix reflective strips on your clothing.
- Vehicles make not be able to see you if you wear dark clothing.
- Carry a flashlight or glow stick in order to help vehicles see you better.
- Pay extra attention, particularly to crosswalks, intersections and the side of the road. Kids tend to walk along the curbs, cutting across the street to get to other homes. Keep scanning all around you as you drive, whether as thru traffic or along with your kids as they trick-or-treat.
- Drive below the posted speed limit in residential areas during trick-or-treating hours. This will allow you time to brake if you see a child dart in front of you.
- Do not pass other vehicles that have stopped in the roadway, they could be dropping off children.

Village of Greendale Health Department Confirms First Case of Measles in 2011
September 19, 2011 | 05:20 PM
Health Officials promote awareness, vaccinations
The Village of Greendale Health Department (GHD) has identified a laboratory confirmed case of measles in a Greendale resident. The case is a young child who has been isolated at home with a clinical presentation and signs and symptoms compatible with measles. The last confirmed case of measles in Greendale was in 2008. The child was exposed to a confirmed case and is too young to be vaccinated. The child is cared for at home and does not attend school or child care. There are no other children in the home. The health department has identified contacts to the child and is following them to assure they are vaccinated or receive proper health care. Measles is an extremely serious and highly contagious viral disease that is easily spread through airborne droplets person to person. At this time, GHD strongly urges all Milwaukee-area health-care professionals to maintain a high index of suspicion for the appearance of additional measles cases in the coming weeks and report all suspect cases to local public health authorities.
Measles vaccine is highly effective in preventing the disease. Village residents who are not vaccinated or unable to obtain measles vaccine can receive vaccinations at GHD on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 from 4:00-6:00 PM. People can walk in without an appointment. People can also contact their private provider.
