Why get a permit?
Although property owners are required by ordinance to obtain a permit for those items listed above, there are several benefits to doing home improvement projects with a permit. The primary benefit is that a permit in-hand brings you the services of the Village Building, Heating, Plumbing & Electrical Inspectors. The Inspector approves each phase of the construction process ensuring that all work is done properly according to local and State Codes. Remember that codes are generally minimum standards that are necessary to protect you and your property.
Additionally, there are legal and financial liabilities that you may incur when work is done without the benefit of a permit. Performing work without a permit is illegal and violators will be prosecuted. Further complications may arise when trying to sell your home. State law requires the seller to disclose work that may have been done without a permit. Additionally, insurance companies may not cover a loss that results from an improper installation that was done without a permit. More importantly, an improper installation can result in the loss of life.
How do I apply for a permit?
Permit applications are available in the above links, the Village Clerk's office or the
Department of Inspection Services. For smaller jobs, it is only necessary to fill out a permit application and pay the fee. For large projects, such as an addition, copies of the construction plans and survey must accompany the application. For specific submittal details for your project, contact the Department
of Inspection Services. Informational handouts for decks, sheds, fences, and pools are also available at Village Hall.
How much does a permit cost?
Permit fees for more common projects such as re roofing, siding/trim, decks, sheds and fences range in cost between $50 to $80. Fees for general remodeling are charged according to the value of the project plus plan examination fees. If you are contemplating doing a remodeling project or an addition, please call for a more detailed explanation of the submittal requirements and permit fee charges. |
