Permit Requirements


Building Permits

A Building Permit is required for the items listed below. This list is not inclusive, but does cover the more common items that require permits.   • New Buildings, additions & alterations (interior & exterior) - Residential Building Board Guidelines
  • Room/porch conversions
  • Structural alterations and changes to interior circulation patterns
  • Garages
  • Storage sheds - Shed Regulations
  • Re-roofing, siding & trim
  • Rec-rooms/basement offices
  • Decks (attached, detached and decks surrounding pools, including access ramps) - Deck Regulations & 2016 Deck Code Appendix B and Appendix C
  • Fences - Fence Regulations
  • Foundation repairs
  • Window replacements where opening is being altered - Egress Window Requirements
  • Fireplaces, wood-burning stoves & fireplace inserts (new or replacements)
  • Gazebos
  • Swimming pools (above-ground & in-ground) - Pool Regulations
  • Grading or landscaping involving changes in yard grade
  • Hot tubs (interior & exterior)
  • Signs
  • Driveway approach
  • Recreational facilities (basketball courts, tennis courts, etc.)
  • Dog kennels

Electrical Permit

Only State licensed Master Electricians may perform electrical work in the Village of Greendale. An Electrical Permit is required for the items listed below. This list is not inclusive, but does cover the more common items that require permits.   • Circuit extensions for new outlets, fixtures, etc.
  • Air-Conditioners (Also requires a Heating Permit)
  • Dishwashers (Also requires a Plumbing Permit)
  • Furnaces (Also requires a Heating Permit)
  • Hot Tubs (Also requires a Building Permit)
  • Post lights
  • Water Heaters (Also requires a Plumbing Permit)

  • Furnaces/boilers, new or replacements (Also requires an Electrical Permit)
  • Air-Conditioners, new or replacements (Also requires an Electrical Permit)
  • New ductwork or boiler circulating piping

Plumbing Permit

A Plumbing Permit is required for the items listed below. This list is not inclusive, but does cover the more common items that require permits.   • New buildings, additions & alterations
  • Water heaters (gas or electric), new or replacements (If electric, also requires an Electrical Permit)
  • Dishwashers new or replacements (Also requires an Electrical Permit)
  • Fixture replacement (sinks, garbage disposals, toilets, tubs, showers, hose bibs, etc.)
  • Water softeners
  • Backflow prevention devices
