Services

 

Adult Services Librarian Sandra Grams hosted a program on the digital TV transition with John Kuzma from the FCC office in Chicago.  The meeting was attended by eight residents on September 30th. 

 

The 2008 Summer Reading Program, Catch the Reading Bug, was concluded on Friday, August 22nd.  Sandy Grams, Adult Services Librarian, concluded her Adult Summer Reading Program with an adult program featuring certified laugh leader Diane Kane on August 26th. 

 

The Greendale Public Library Foundation, Inc., in association with Associated Bank, created and printed bookmarks for the Library that carry our hours and information on one side and the bank’s information on the other.  (August)

 

The Library is working with William Attewell who is re-designing the website for the Village including the Library’s pages.  (August)

 

The Library installed a camera at the Registration desk to take pictures of our customers.  The picture in the customer record will reduce fraud and identity theft.  (April)

 

The Library staff worked with the Village Manager to develop a procedure for pursuing customers with overdue fines and replacement fines of more than $100 (February)

 

Adult Services Librarian Sandy Grams posted new and colorful end panel signs throughout the collection (February)

 

The Friends of the Library held their annual Winter Book sale.  Also, the library was a host for one of the Chili Contest sites, part of the Left My Heart on Broad Street celebration.  (February)

 

Library staff met with Allan McCoy, Greendale Middle School, to discuss the purchase and maintenance of iMac laptop workstations in the Youth area.  (February)

Community Connections

 

The Library had a static display at the Child Development Days seminar in September.

 

During the Village Days celebration this year, the Library was the display site for an anniversary quilt made by Mary Schroedl.  The Library also had a display of watercolors by three 1953 graduates of Greendale High School.  The Historical Society used two of the library’s display cases to promote the 70th Anniversary of the Village. 

 

The Library had a static display in the Southridge Mall during the community event on the 16th of August.

 

Monica Rynders, a student at Alverno College, concluded her intern work at our library.  Her goal is to determine if she would want to go to library school after she graduates from Alverno.

 

Leslie Schultz, a long distance library school student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, is going to volunteer at our library beginning this month.  Leslie has applied for a practicum experience with our library.

 

The Director was the luncheon speaker at the Greendale Woman’s Club when he presented on his 2006 trip to China.  (February)  The Director was a speaker at the Burlington and Cudahy public libraries during the month.  (March)

 

Ed Block, Marquette University professor of English, and the Director attended the kickoff celebration for The Big Read grant.  Greendale is cooperating with the Milwaukee Public Library on this National Endowment for the Arts grant;  the Big Read book discussion, featuring Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, was discussed on April 17th.

 

Circulation and Technical Services Librarian Mary Helen Block is co-chairing the Village’s bid for an America in Bloom award through her work on the Greendale Community Education Council.
