DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Throughout the year the Library continued to provide excellent service to our customers on a daily basis.  Besides circulation of materials, the library provides access to the Internet, electronic databases (both inside and outside the library), programming (storytimes, summer reading, book discussions), and services (homebound, computer classes, proctoring exams, field study experiences).

I was especially proud of the “I’m Wired” campaign the Library managed this year.  This valiant attempt to lift the computer literacy of the community was a huge success with our customers and proved an excellent co-operative effort between the Library and many community organizations and units of government.

A new roof was installed on our building this year, ending many years of concerns over leaks.  The Library also went wireless this year, providing access to the Internet in a new and exciting fashion for our residents.  We also installed our new telephone system and established a routing tree to help patrons contact us around the clock.

I was extremely pleased this year to receive the 2005 Margaret E. Monroe Library Adult Services Award administered by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA).  This annual citation is presented to a librarian who has made a significant contribution to, and had an impact on, library service to adults.  Margaret E. Monroe, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison until her retirement in 1981, was nationally known for her contributions to teaching, research and service in the field of library services to adults.  Jon J. Kadus, awards committee chair, stated, "Gary has a long and varied career in Adult Services, most notably in Readers Advisory.  He is the author of 'Make Mine a Mystery,' a guide to the mystery genre for librarians and serves on and gives presentations to many organizations around the country.   His involvement in programming, education and publishing makes him a valued recipient of the Margaret E. Monroe Award."

Over the years, as I developed my skills in Readers’ Advisory, the staff of the Greendale Public Library has shown a strong dedication to serving the public.  I would like to thank them for the opportunities they provide the public, and their Library Director.

Sincerely,

Gary Warren Niebuhr

Library Director
