THE 2008 SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Catch the Reading Bug
READING CLUB Register for the READING CLUB beginning June 16th and receive your recording sheet. All reading must be completed and reported by August 22nd at 5:00 p.m. to be eligible for the prize drawing. Children of any age may join the club and record titles read to them, titles read on their own, or time spent reading. Receive prize coupons after first 10 titles or 3 hours and 20 minutes of reading. Enter drawing for more prizes after each additional 10 titles or 3 hours and 20 minutes of reading. VOLUNTEER CLUB Volunteers (persons completing grade 5 through adult) are invited to assist the Summer Readers. Volunteers are needed for Reading Club registration; storytime assistance; cutting, gluing, etc.; and technical processing projects. Volunteer opportunities are limited. Training provided. Persons volunteering 10 or more hours will be invited to attend the CATCH THE READING BUG Pizza Party on August 22nd at 2 p.m. For more information, please call the library. Volunteer applications are available at the library and should be completed by June 9th. TERRIFIC TUESDAYS June 17 – July 29 Performances will be held at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Each event will last approximately 45 minutes (except July 8th). Attendance is limited to the first 95 children (must be able to attend “on their own”) who arrive on time for the program. Numbers will be given out in the library beginning 30 minutes prior to the program. Adults will be admitted at the program start time if children have not taken all 95 spaces. (Also, for each program we need 4 adults to assist. If you are willing to volunteer, please let us know at least 1 week prior to the program.) All programs are held in the Meeting Room in the lower level of the library. June 17 – Magic Show – LaBak the Magician amazes and entertains. June 24 – The Bug Show – Interactive and zany comedy presented by Kidsplay. July 1 – Sports Science - Karl Debelack, Adventures in Science, shares facts and fun about sports. July 8 – Bugs on Stage! – (program lasts 60 minutes) Nature in the Parks informs us about insects and their creepy crawly relatives. There will be time to get up-close and personal with some live insects. July 15 – Fun Songs for Kids – Sing along as Douglas Udell performs exciting children’s music. July 22 – Good Morning, Grumpus Caterpillar! – The Atwood Players entertain with a fun play. July 29 – Camp Creep – A puppet show presented by Puppet Story Theater. BOOK DISCUSSIONS LUNCH BUNCH 12:30 – 1:30 (every third Thursday) 4th, 5th & 6th Level Students (Fall 2008) Discussion leader: Lesley Connor, Once Upon a Time, The Village Bookshop June 19 James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl July 10 Loser by Jerry Spinelli July 31 Gossamer by Lois Lowry August 21 Group Choice (The group will select a book July 10) Read the book prior to the discussion. Request a library book or purchase your own copy (discount provided at Once Upon a Time). Bring your own lunch. Beverage provided. Enrollment is limited. BOOK BUDDIES 12:30 – 1:30 Mondays or Thursdays (June 16 – July 3) 2nd & 3rd Level Students (Fall 2008) In the Garden (Andrew Lost series #4) by Judith C. Greenburg Discussion Leader: Mary Helen Block, Circulation and Technical Services Librarian Each group meets for three weekly sessions. A paperback copy of the book will be provided to each participant. In addition to discussing the book, there will be activities such as games and crafts. Bring your own lunch. Beverage will be provided. Enrollment is limited. Registration required – see registration note. SPIN A TALE STORYTIMES June 18 – July 24 A series of six storytimes for ages 3 through 6 years will be held on Wednesdays (2 p.m.) and Thursdays (9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.) Each storytime lasts approximately 45 minutes. Caregivers do not have to attend, but are asked to remain in the Building. (For those attending the 9:30 a.m. storytime, please enter at the Health Department entrance – the library opens at 10 a.m.) Enrollment is limited. Registration required – see registration note. June 18 or 19 – Beetles and Bugs June 25 or 26 – Butterflies and Flowers July 2 or 3 – In Flight July 9 or 10 – What’s the Buzz? July 16 or 17 – Creepy Crawlies July 23 or 24 – Bed Bugs: Bedtime and Nighttime Stories GAZEBO STORYTIME Tuesday, August 19 Stories in the Park will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Gazebo (corner of Broad and Schoolway). The 45 minute session will include stories, songs and fun for children ages 3 – 6. Please bring your own towel, blanket, cushion or lawn chair for seating. Caregivers are asked to remain in or near the Gazebo. Enrollment is limited. Registration begins on Monday, August 11th at 8:30 a.m. by phone or 10:00 a.m. in person for Greendale residents. Registration for the general public begins on Tuesday, August 12th. E-mail registrations to grnd.ref@mcfls.org that are initiated after 8:30 a.m. on August 11th will be accepted. In case of inclement weather the program will be held in the meeting room in the lower level of the Library Building.
