Village Hall Update for April 5

Village Board Meeting in Review
The Village Board considered a number of items at their previous meeting. They approved several parade permit applications including the 2011 Village Days Parade, the 2011 4th of July Parade, and Ava’s Walk for Pedestrian Safety. The Board also discussed the status of the 2011 Budget and forwarded the subject to the Finance Committee for review and recommendation. They met in closed session to discuss wages and benefits for the Village’s represented and non-represented employees but no action was taken. An additional meeting in Closed Session took place to discuss economic development efforts in the Southridge Mall area and the planned multi-million dollar redevelopment of Southridge Mall.

April 5 Village Board Meeting Preview
At their meeting on Tuesday, April 5th the Village Board will consider the referral of communications for the replacement of the Village’s elevated storage tank and the Root River Drive flood control project to the Public Works Committee for their review and recommendation. A Special Use/Building Permit Application for a proposed Walmart at 5301 South 76th Street (former American Bowling Congress Building); a Special Use/Building Permit Application to remodel the building’s exterior entrance at Kohl’s Department Store located at Southridge Mall, 5300 South 76th Street; and a Special Use Permit Application to authorize temporary use to conduct motorcycle safety training classes in the general location of the northeast parking lot at Southridge Mall, 5300 South 76th Street will be referred to the Plan Commission for their review and recommendation. The Village Board will also consider recommendations from the Finance Committee for the following: awarding the 2011 Village Street Rehabilitation and Drainage Improvements Program; Resolution R2011-02 “Approving the 2012- 2014 Community Development Block Grant Program Participation Agreement”; approval of beverage operator licenses; Finance Committee internal audit review of bills presented for payment; approval of Accounts Payable checks for payment; and review of the Status of Accounts submitted by the Clerk- Treasurer. The Village Board will consider approving proclamations for two Eagle Scouts - Kevin David Walsh and Alexander John Unger as well as a proclamation for Arbor Day. The Board will meet in closed session to discuss contract negotiations with the Village’s represented employees. An additional meeting in closed session will take place to discuss economic development efforts in the Southridge Mall area and the planned multi-million dollar redevelopment of Southridge Mall.

Wal-Mart Proposal for Development Would Bring a Grocery Back To Greendale; Open House on April 7
The Village of Greendale will host an open house this Thursday, April 7, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Greendale High School Multipurpose Room, 6801 Southway to present a proposal and solicit public input on the development of a Wal-Mart in Greendale. All interested persons are invited to attend.

The proposal includes a Wal-Mart market and pharmacy and two out lots for development by future tenants. The proposed Wal-Mart market would mark the return of a grocery store to the Village of Greendale. For more information, please click here.

Medicine Collection Day on April 30
Water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove all medicines from the waste stream. Drugs can end up going through the plants and directly to our lakes and rivers. Various levels of antibiotics, anti-depressants, veterinary drugs, birth control hormones and other drugs have been detected in waterways across the United States. A prescription for clean water and safe kids will be held on Saturday, April 30 (for Milwaukee County residents ONLY) at Miller Park. To learn more, please click here.

Step Up to Better Health Walk on June 18
The annual Step Up to Better Health Walk will be held on Saturday, June 18. The Walk will begin at 9 a.m. at the Greendale Gazebo (Broad Street and School Way. For more information and a registration form, please visit: www.greendale.org/Walk

Greendale 75 Anniversary Committee Announces ‘Countdown To 75’ Calendar
Greendale’s 75th Anniversary Committee is developing an 18-month ‘countdown’ calendar, running from June 2011 through December 2012. Greendale celebrates its 75th Anniversary in 2013.

Each month, the ‘Countdown to 75 Calendar’ will feature pictures of Greendale residents, Greendale organizations, as well as important events – past and present. The pictures will come from you and your neighbors. It is a calendar for Greendale, made by Greendale.

“Greening Up Your Yard” Workshop on May 7; Grants Available for Rain Gardens
The Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network will partner with the Village of Greendale Public Works Department to offer a free workshop on “Greening Up Your Yard” to improve water quality. The event will be held on Saturday, May 7 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The workshop is free and open to the public and there will be a drawing for a free rain barrel.
