Village Hall Update for January 17

Welcome to the first edition of the Village Hall Update for 2011. This week’s update includes information about upcoming meetings at Village Hall, details about the new Wisconsin Carbon Monoxide Law, the Health Department’s community survey and other community news.

Village Board Meeting in Review
The Village Board considered a number of items at the meeting on December 21. The Board approved amendments to the Village of Greendale Zoning Code to create a New TND Traditional Neighborhood Development Overlay District Zoning Classification and Associated Amendments to the Development Review Process.

They approved the creation of Tax Incremental District Number Two, Village of Greendale, including the proposed boundaries and Project Plan. Additionally, the Board approved the Southridge Mall Business Improvement District’s (BID) Operating Plan and Tax Levy. The Southridge Mall BID has been in existence since 2003. The BID was used by the former owner of Southridge Mall to pay for a number of improvements made to the Mall a number of years ago. A development agreement with the owners of Southridge Mall was also approved. The development agreement includes the terms under which Southridge Mall will be redeveloped.

The Board approved a proclamation proclaiming December 31, 2010 as Robert J. Dams Recognition Day in the Village of Greendale in appreciation for the retiring Police Chief’s many years of service.

January 18 Village Board Meeting Preview
On Tuesday, January 18, the Village Board will consider several items. They will begin the process of considering projects for the 2011 Street Rehabilitation Program. In addition, they will consider referring a certified survey map combining two parcels for the senior housing complex being constructed at 6801 W. Loomis Road. Trustees will consider beverage operator’s licenses and will review the Village’s financial status with the Clerk-Treasurer. Also on the agenda is consideration of special community event permits for Trimborn Farms to hold four events in 2011 and special community event permits for Grandhaven LLC to hold five events in 2011: I Left My Heart on Broad Street, Spring into Greendale, Gallery Night, Hay Days, and A Dickens of a Christmas. The Village Board will consider awarding a contract to reconstruct the recycling ramps at the Department of Public Works facility. The board will meet in closed session to discuss contract negotiations with the Village’s represented employees, and discuss economic development efforts in the Southridge Mall area and the planned multi-million dollar redevelopment of Southridge Mall.

Wisconsin’s Carbon Monoxide (CO) Law Takes Effect on February 1
Effective February 1, 2011 property owners must install Carbon Monoxide alarms in every home and on every level near sleeping areas.

Wisconsin’s new carbon monoxide (CO) law will help ensure safe homes with the presence of CO alarms. But fire and carbon monoxide prevention starts with education about this new law.

What You Need to Know
  • All single family and two-unit homes – new and existing – must install a CO alarm on every floor level near sleeping areas.
  • New construction must be hard-wired with a battery back-up.
  • Existing homes may install any type of CO alarms; battery, plug-in, or combination smoke/CO devices.
  • A carbon monoxide detector required under this section shall bear an Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., listing mark.
  • The law takes effect February 1, 2011.
  • Alarms should be installed in accordance with manufacturer’s directions.
Exceptions
  • CO alarms are only required in new and existing homes that have any fuel burning appliances including: stoves, ovens, grills, clothes dryers, furnaces, boilers, water heaters, fireplaces and heaters OR an attached garage.
  • Alarms do not need to be installed in the attic, garage or storage areas of homes.
Maintenance
  • Test alarms monthly.
  • Replace alarms according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Check batteries and replace twice a year.
  • Alarms should never be disconnected or unplugged.
  • Batteries should never be removed for other uses.

Health Department Community Survey
The Greendale Health Department is conducting a community health assessment as part of strategic planning to focus the efforts of the department in the Village of Greendale. As part of the community health assessment, the Greendale Health Department is conducting a confidential on-line community survey.

To take the survey on-line, please visit www.orghealth.com/ghd. The results of the survey will be summarized by an independent researcher and reported back to the Health Department. Resident input will help the Department identify and plan their work for the future.
