Village Hall Update for October 18

Welcome to the first edition of the Village Hall Update. This bi-weekly communication from the Village of Greendale will be posted every other Monday. The Village Hall Update will include general information about upcoming public meetings, a review of past meetings, important community information and reminders about upcoming events.

Village Hall Updates will be archived on the Village website providing you with an opportunity to review past updates. We are hopeful that this communication will provide you with timely information and updates about the happenings in the historic Village of Greendale. October 5 Village Board Meeting Review

The Village Board considered a number of items at their previous meeting. They amended the ordinance that regulates home occupations. A permit is now required, however a fee will not be charged. The Board approved a special use request for the 90-unit affordable senior housing development known as Berkshire-Greendale. Final approval includes creation of a new access point to Southridge Mall at Northway. Also approved was $2.15M in general obligation bonds to fund the public portion of the Berkshire-Greendale project. These bonds will be paid from revenues generated by the project’s tax incremental finance (TIF) district. The Board approved a Temporary Class B liquor license for St. Alphonsus Catholic Church as well as beverage operator licenses. The Historical Society’s lease for the annex building and former police station was amended, giving them a one-year extension. The Village Board also reviewed the Village’s financial status report from the Clerk-Treasurer. They approved a new event - the Historical Society’s request to conduct a Halloween walk near the former hose tower building. This children’s Halloween walk will be held on October 23rd.

October 19 Village Board Meeting Preview

On Tuesday, October 19th the Village Board will consider several items. The most notable item on the agenda is the presentation of the Village Manager’s 2011 Recommended Budget which includes a proposed 1.7% tax levy increase for next year. The department heads will also present their monthly reports to the Board. The Board will meet in Closed Session to discuss contract negotiations with the Village’s represented employees and economic development efforts in the Southridge Mall area.

Public Invited to Attend 2011 Budget Work Session
On Thursday, November 11, the Village Board of Trustees will conduct the final Committee of the Whole Budget Work Session to review the Village’s 2011Budget. This session will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room of Village Hall. The public is encouraged to attend this meeting to provide input to the Board as the Village faces another difficult budget year.

Don't Forget to Vote
The Fall General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, in the Village of Greendale. All polling places will open at 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m. For more information on how to register to vote, polling locations, or for a sample ballot, please click here.

Halloween Trick-or-Treat, Parade Set for October 31
A Halloween parade on Sunday, October 31 kicks off this year’s events. Again this year there will be a costume pet parade in addition to the children’s parade. Parents and pet owners should have their children and pets assemble at Brinkman Field (east side of the High School) at 11:30 a.m. Thee parade will begin at noon and go down Broad Street, ending at the Reiman Visitor’s Center where treat bags will be handed out to all costumed children.

Trick-or-Treat hours are set for 1 to 4 pm. The Police Department will again concentrate on residential patrols to make sure children are safe.

Halloween Walk in the Woods
The Greendale Historical Society will host a “Halloween Walk Through the Woods” on Saturday, October 23. Participants will join a “haunted” walking tour of Greendale’s Canterbury Woods. The event runs from  4 to 7 p.m. A bag of Halloween goodies will be available to the first 144 children. For more information, please click here.

Buckthorn Weed-Outs Scheduled by Greendale Environmental Group

The Greendale Environmental Group will be holding a series of Buckthorn removal weed-outs this fall. The weed-outs will occur on Saturdays between 9 and 11 a.m. at the following locations:
  • October 23: Dale Creek Parkway – park on Clover, south of Clover Lane bridge
  • October 30: Sherwood Park – park at path on Dartmoor Avenue
  • November 6: Greenway Park – park on Greenway at ball field
  • November 13: Eastway woodlands on Eastway between S. 51st Street and Sugarbush Court
